I have done heaps of wellie walks in hunters, Barbours and my Le Chameaus and now that I think about it although I do go over the tops of them and fill them up with water it is far more likely to happen in my skellerups. Strangely enough, on reflection back ,mainly in my black skellerup terranovas. One of those shops is still a shoe shop and I get a lump in my throat when I look inside for the welly rack nearly 50 years on.ĭone a fair bit of boot sinking in mud over the years, both accidental and on purpose. They may have been riding boots or the smallest size in ladies' rain boots but they were black and shiny and reached my knees and I remember my heart pounded when I put them on. Mum had had enough and said I should get a pair from the ones lined up on the floor at the foot of the adult welly rack in the second to last shop but I begged her to try the last shop on the other side of the road and we went across and she asked the lady if she had any that matched my strict criteria, she returned carrying a normal pair of boy's wellies and the boots of my dreams. I don't know if I had seen riding boots or the tailored rubber women's rain boots of the time but I knew what I wanted and eventually we found some in the last shop. ![]() All the boy's boots we found were mid-calf, chunky-soled Dunlop style wellies but in my head, I felt I wanted taller sleeker smooth-soled welly boots. ![]() I remember those wonderful boots I had and the grand tour of the shoeshops in our town I dragged my mother around until I found them in one of the last two shops which were opposite each other in the high street.
