The reason I forgot is that I also have the 6 disc theatrical box sets of both trilogies, so the Middle Earth Collection didn't have anything new for me. the ones for An Unexpected Journey are just the collected production vlogs and some trailers, the ones for Fellowship of the Ring are some documentary-type TV specials, online featurettes, TV spots, and the Enya May It Be music video - but they're still nice to have. The special features on them aren't anything super significant or unique when put against the Appendices - e.g. The 6 extra discs (1 per movie) are the Disc 2s from all the releases of the theatrical editions of the movies (the 2 disc ones anyway - I know the LOTR Theatrical Editions are also available in 1 disc per movie vanilla releases). The 2015 Extended Edition box set is really the only Blu ray release in contention when it comes to extras, so you can just get that - or the "Middle Earth Collection", if that fits with your LOTR choice.Īhh, sorry, I forgot about this. If they aren't there, then 2011 EE set + 2020 4K set is probably the perfect combo for you.įor The Hobbit it's a bit easier. If they're all there, the 2011 box set essentially becomes obsolete. The one thing that's still uncertain about the Remastered Blus is that it hasn't been revealed either way whether the movie discs will still have the audio commentaries. And for the Extended Edition Remastered set, all of the special features discs from the 2011 release are being included. For these, the movies themselves will be based on the 4K versions and so will have the superior colour grading and such - just without the higher resolution and dynamic range, obviously. However, if you're in the market for LOTR EE Blu rays then I'd wait for the end of this month for the "Remastered" sets to come out. The "Middle Earth Collection" set is also good for containing all the same content + The Hobbit Extended Editions and Appendices (sans 3D versions) but the packaging is pretty poor compared to the dedicated LOTR and Hobbit box sets. Technically the badly named "Ultimate Collector's Edition" does have that one extra special features disc, but yeah, it's disappointing.Ĭurrently the 2011 Lord of the Rings Extended Edition box set (and reprintings thereof) is still the best Blu ray release for LOTR.
